Career planning is more than collecting certificates
Maritime careers develop through the combination of certification, sea service, competence, responsibility, performance and professional credibility. Certificates are important, but a long-term roadmap also considers the roles you want next and the experience required to become credible in those roles.
Start with the destination
Define a target role or family of roles. Examples include deck officer progression, engineering leadership, marine operations, HSE, compliance, training, surveying, vetting, port operations or shore-based management.
Build a competence map
- Current certificates and endorsements.
- Required certificates for the target role.
- Sea-service or practical experience.
- Technical knowledge.
- Leadership and communication.
- Digital and documentation skills.
- Industry-specific knowledge.
Use a three-horizon plan
0–12 months: close immediate certificate and competence gaps.
1–3 years: build experience and take on progressively more responsibility.
3–5 years: position for the desired senior or shore-based role through evidence of leadership and specialist competence.
Keep evidence
Maintain a professional portfolio containing certificates, sea-service records, assessments, training evidence, projects, commendations and relevant professional development. A well-organized portfolio reduces friction when applying for opportunities.
