Training becomes more valuable when it begins with a clearly defined competence need. A training-needs analysis connects roles, required competence, current capability, operational priorities and measurable outcomes.

A five-step method

  1. Map roles and responsibilities.
  2. Define required competence using applicable requirements and company expectations.
  3. Assess current capability using records, assessments and operational evidence.
  4. Prioritize gaps by regulatory urgency, risk and business impact.
  5. Measure whether the intervention produced the intended result.

Why this improves decisions

Instead of asking “Which course should we buy?”, management can ask “Which competence gap are we trying to close, for whom, and what evidence will show improvement?”
