STCW 2026: What Maritime Professionals Should Know

The IMO's 2026 edition of the STCW Convention and STCW Code was published in July 2026, while amendments that entered into force on 1 January 2026 introduced new minimum training requirements related to preventing and responding to violence and harassment in the maritime sector.

Why 2026 matters

STCW is an international baseline, but certificates and training are implemented through national maritime administrations. A professional should therefore distinguish the Convention and Code from the specific process used by the authority issuing or recognizing a certificate.

What changed in 2026

Among the amendments entering into force on 1 January 2026 were changes to the STCW Code addressing violence and harassment, including sexual harassment, bullying and sexual assault. The IMO also published the 2026 edition of the STCW Convention and STCW Code in July and August 2026.
